Enriched Air / Nitrox

What is Enriched Air?

To understand what Enriched Air is, we have to discuss what regular air is. The air we breathe is approximately 21% Oxygen (20.95% more accurately). The rest is almost entirely Nitrogen. Enriched Air is any mix that has more than 21% Oxygen.

Why would I want to use Enriched Air?

As you should remember from your Open Water class, excess Nitrogen coming out of solution in our bodies is the cause of Decompression Sickness (DCS). If the gas you breathe has more Oxygen, then it has less Nitrogen, which means less Nitrogen builds up in your body. Enriched Air allows us to extend our bottom time or shorten our surface intervals in between dives, but it comes with some significant risks. Enriched Air is incredibly popular, especially on liveaboard dive boats, where you might do 5 dives in a day!

What will I learn in the Enriched Air / Nitrox course?

You will learn how the physics and physiology behind the changes necessary to your dive plan when you use Enriched Air. You will also learn how to adapt your Dive Computer or Dive Tables to use with Enriched Air. Finally, you will learn how to use an analyzer to properly identify gas mixes and determine the appropriate "floors" for your dives.
